Taron and Cecil Harding have named this refill their signature refill since the main theme of the refill has nothing to do with certain musical styles. The sounds, samples and patches are very personal expressions and can be used in almost every musical style. In spite of this we strongly believe this refill is a must-have for every composer who works in the film and TV industry.

The Subtractor and the Malström are the heart of this refill
Sure we have embedded lots of samples in this refill but most combinator patches are based on sounddesign using the subtractor and the malström. Synthesizers are so much more powerfull when it comes to musical expression and liveliness of the sounds and patches. The sub and the mal have surprised us many times since they enabled us to make sounds we thought that would only be within reach using recording gear and samplers. Synthesized sounds are so much more flexible than sampled sounds when you play them on your keyboard using velocity, modwheels and other controllers. The combinator which was introduced with the release of Reason 3 made a lot of dreams come true thanks to the possibilty to stack whatever combination of Reason tools we thought we needed to build our sometimes very complex patches. To us Reason, its combinators and its synthesizers feel like genuine, organic musical instruments.

A variety of rare samples
The samples we made are goodies you won't find easily elsewhere, gathered together in just one product: a beautiful upright piano one can find in peoples living rooms, tibetan bowls, a harp, improvisations in A minor on an Irish sniper flute and a muted trumpet, tender and mystic female voices, a toy piano, household percussion and lots of ambient soundscapes created using softsynths we have build ourselves. And there is much more!

This demo contains a crossfade between several Sonic Flavours piano patches. The first one is our Submarines Grand which is a combination of some Reason FSB samples and our own home piano samples. The purpose of this patch was to make a less clean, not so perfectly pitched but warm sounding piano patch compared to everything that is on the market allready. It's surely no substitute for all those great libraries but a nice addition for those who like a lively, retroish sound.

harp (mp3 demo)
The harp samples are recorded by Emmanuel Theelen in his gigantic Protools HD studios in Limburg, the Netherlands. This patch has only one velocity layer. We are planning to release a multi layered harp refill somewhere at the end of 2006. The reverb you hear is the R66.

lush etherical voices (mp3 demo)
It won't get more signature than this: mrs Harding herself singing Ah and Oh like she did on numerous Harding albums. These samples are quite vintage (1995) and were recorded directly into a Kurzweil k2000 using an AKG C1000. Those were the days! These samples work best in A minor or D minor (dorian).

24 bits, Bruel & Kjear and AKG C414 microphones and John van der Lugt hitting his drumset in our studio using MOTU 828 and Steinbergs Nuendo as recording gear.

In our pads and soundscapes sections you will find a lot of samples that were originally created using the Merlin One which is a soft synth (subtractive and FM) build in NI Reaktor.

Glockenstein  (mp3 demo)
This patch is made using sampled Tibetan bowls Harding found at a fleemarket in Anjuna Beach, Goa, India. The bowls were patched through the malströms comb filters.

sniperflute performances (mp3 demo)
This sniper flute performance can be found in the refills modules section as a rex file and a wav file. The flute player is Marcel Ebbers from France, a great and remarkable multi-talented musician who also played our sampled muted trumpet performances. The recordings were done in Marcels project studio somewhere in the French Ardennes shortly before the dawn of a new day using a C414 and lots of coffee. The reverb you hear is the R66. You'll find more of these fine performances in future Sonic Flavours refills.
